What is a NAHTM / ITC Certified Health Care Transporter (CHT)
The NAHTM CHT Instructor Program is a hospital-based train-the-trainer initiative led by Certified Healthcare Transporter Instructors (CHTI). Through this program, patient transporters achieve proficiency in one or more of the three courses within the CHT curriculum: Technical Skills Training for Healthcare Transporters (CHT-1), CHOICES: Ethics for the Workplace (CHT-2), and Strategic Skill Building for Healthcare Transporters (CHT-3 / CHT). Impact Training Company (ITC) and the National Association of Healthcare Transport Management (NAHTM) partnered to develop this curriculum, establishing a national standard for patient transporter training and enhancing on-the-job performance through effective instruction by certified trainers.
What is a CHT Instructor?
A CHT Instructor (CHTI) has successfully completed the two-day CHT Instructor training. Typically, CHT Instructors lead hospital-based Transport Departments or work in human resources training and other leadership roles within healthcare organizations.
To attain the CHT Instructor credential, the candidate who attends the rigorous two-day training course first masters in-depth knowledge of the contents of the three-course program.
2) methodologies to deliver the curriculum virtually or in person; 3) strategies to implement the program; and 4) how to best engage trainees. Two 4-hour sessions each day engage participants in multiple interactive activities and discussions. The training is focused on curriculum content, methodology, delivery, and implementation strategies.
Those who earn a CHT Instructor credential (CHTI) will be certified to train Healthcare Transporters in the customized curriculum endorsed by NAHTM, and to make recommendations for national certification awards for their successful Healthcare Transporters to NAHTM. In addition, certified CHT Instructors (CHTI) are able to deliver similar ITC-customized curriculum in other front-line healthcare disciplines.
What Topics do the 3 Course Address?
Technical Skills Training for Healthcare Transporters (CHT-1)
Firstly, under the NAHTM CHT Instructor Program, CHT-1 provides essential technical knowledge and skills for healthcare transporters, specifically emphasizing equipment proficiency and adherence to transport safety protocols that meet the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals and Environment of Care mandates. Meanwhile, experienced healthcare transporters can efficiently review these core job tasks, demonstrate mastery of specified competencies, and pass a comprehensive exam. Conversely, new transporters will receive the in-depth training needed to master these critical technical skills. Ultimately, the outcome is a highly skilled, self-confident, and reliable healthcare transporter who is fully prepared to achieve national certification.
Choices: Ethics for the Workplace (CHT-2)
Within the NAHTM CHT Instructor Program, CHT-2 focuses on developing crucial life and interpersonal skills vital for a thriving career. Specifically, this course features eight modules that address key workplace success factors: self-esteem, recognizing obsessive/compulsive behaviors, courtesy, emotional maturity, conscientiousness, trustworthiness, long-term job commitment, and safe job performance. Moreover, transporters learn through easy-to-understand readings, followed by practical exercises designed for immediate application. In addition, interactive peer discussion groups foster engagement and shared learning. As a result, participants emerge as more confident and secure healthcare transporters. Ultimately, they are better prepared to prioritize patient well-being, collaborate effectively with coworkers, and consistently meet supervisory expectations. Notably, healthcare facilities often report that this course profoundly transforms the lives and professional outlook of their frontline teams.
Strategic Skill Building for Healthcare Transporters (CHT-3)
CHT-3 focuses on cultivating applied cognitive strategies—thinking skills—that drive competent and effective performance in healthcare transport roles. Specifically, participants work with actual job materials and realistic scenarios drawn directly from transporter experiences. In these sessions, they address critical job functions. For example, they enhance clear and professional communication with peers, supervisors, and other hospital departments. They also improve their interpretation and execution of procedural directions. Additionally, participants learn to recognize changing job conditions and respond appropriately. Furthermore, they master effective task prioritization and sound prediction of potential outcomes. Ultimately, successful completion of this course yields consistent, high-quality job performance, responsible decision-making, and exceptional customer service. Finally, all learning outcomes are assessed through performance-based evaluations.
